Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that governments can penalize people for being homeless, even when they have no other shelter options.
Like many of you, we’re and deeply concerned about this news. This latest ruling from the Supreme Court is in direct opposition to William Temple House’s vision of a future where our community is fully nourished – emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Sweeps, fines, and jail time are not solutions to homelessness; they serve to deepen the trauma of homelessness.
The reality is, these changes will likely mean more unhoused neighbors coming to our doors to restock on essential items and find financial assistance to pay camping fines.
Our mission since 1965 has been to serve everyone with compassion and dignity. Despite this setback, William Temple House remains committed to meeting our unhoused neighbors’ needs for low-barrier food, counseling, and connection.
If you are concerned, you can help. Whether through volunteering, donating, advocating, or supporting similar nonprofits, we can advocate for real solutions, care for our unhoused neighbors, and send the unequivocal message that their lives matter.
