William Temple House Board Affirms Plans for Sustainable Future
Anticipated sale of Mackenzie House will increase endowment and bolster the agency’s mission of hope and strength for those in need.
Portland, Ore. — William Temple House, which provides social services to Portland’s most vulnerable populations, today announced plans to further bolster its mission through the anticipated sale of Mackenzie House and the adjacent Abbott Hall in northwest Portland.
“Our commitment to the individuals and families who rely on William Temple House is as strong as ever,” said Executive Director Carrie Hoops. “This move lets us focus on our core mission of providing services, rather than maintaining a historic property. With the current robust real estate market, this is the right time to make a change.”
The board of directors recently completed a careful and strategic evaluation related to the property. They concluded that focusing on the agency’s primary mission is the best way to honor the legacy of William Temple House and the forward thinking men and woman who founded and built the organization.
“Mackenzie House and Abbott Hall have served us well. Looking to the future, we can best advance our mission by relocating. Sale of the property will significantly increase our endowment and our ability to serve our mission for years to come,” said Board President Pat Boyle.
“William Temple House will always be a place of welcome, compassion, safety and healing. The organization has operated in various locations since 1965. It is much bigger than any particular building,” Hoops said.
The nonprofit agency will lease new facilities to house administrative offices and provide low- and no-cost mental health counseling, social services and spiritual care.
“Our services have never been more relevant and needed than they are now,” said Boyle. “We’re seeing increased demand in nearly every program as the cost of basic necessities continues to rise in Portland.”
Mackenzie House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dan Volkmer Team, which specializes in historic and architecturally significant properties, is representing William Temple House on the sale. Parties interested in information about the property are encouraged to contact them at 503-781-3366.
